The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), host of the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) Global Network, are pleased to invite you to our joint webinar on vertical integration for locally-led action on climate adaptation and resilience. This webinar aims to facilitate exchanges on valuable lessons learnt from the collaboration across layers of governance and with non-state stakeholders in the design, development and implementation of NAPs and sector-specific development plans that focus on climate resilience.

Background

Empowering local climate action through greater integration, co-ordination and collaboration across layers of governance is an essential enabler for strengthening climate resilience of human and natural systems. National governments have a key role in the development of just and representative climate-related policies and in overseeing their implementation. Local actors – such as sub-national governments, communities, local businesses and their networks, as well as civil society and research institutions – are not only at the forefront of implementing measures on the ground; they should also contribute to designing and prioritising these measures.

A more consultative and integral approach to the multi-level integration and governance for action on climate resilience can enhance the effectiveness of policy processes and facilitate the inclusion of local contexts and perspectives in national strategies and policies. Such approaches can help overcome technical, financial and political challenges in aligning adaptation goals and visions across levels, as well as in integrating climate risks and opportunities into local-level development strategies.

The webinar will have speakers from governments and providers of development co-operation, who will share their experiences in implementing such multi-level collaboration. Representatives of the OECD and the IISD-NAP Global Network will also provide perspectives from their latest projects. Agenda items and speakers will be announced in due course.
