UPDATE: US climate Summit - April 22nd - 23rd

Dear all,

A short update on the US Climate Summit. It will be over two days from April 22 & 23 (8am-1pm Eastern time), and all of the sessions will be livestreamed. The Summit is also expected to relaunch the MEF - Major Economies Forum.

Summit outline:
  • Plenary session - focused on ambition-raising announcements from leaders (e.g. on enhanced NDCs, sectoral pledges or on net-zero pledges) & launch of the new MEF. ‘Adaptation and resilience’ issues will be integrated into the summit.
  • Finance session - including announcements from countries or by the WB/other PDBs, Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, John Kerry’s public/private sector finance initiative.
  • Technology innovation session – focused on ways to advance development and deployment of a range of currently non-commercial technologies.
  • Building back better and jobs session - a US economic recovery package is expected to be unveiled by President Biden ahead of the summit.

  • Invitations haven’t been shared yet and will go out soon.
  • Expected invitees include traditional MEF countries e.g. Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, the EU, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russian Federation, South Africa, the UK and the US, + new economies e.g. Argentina, Saudi Arabia and Turkey
  • Climate-vulnerable countries
  • Developed & developing countries that are leading on ambition
  • A few business and civil society leaders
